Men’s Health Month: Support The Well-Being of the Men in Your Life

Written by: Ryan Winters

June is National Men’s Health Month, a month to remind all men of the health issues they may be at risk for and what they can do to prevent these issues. Men’s Health Month was started in 1994 when Congress passed a bill to make June a month to bring awareness to early detection and health conditions in men. It is different from Movember which is held in November and focuses on men’s mental health and prostate cancer.

Statistically men are less likely to seek medical advice and are less likely to regularly visit a medical professional. The IUP School of Medicine found that “Only 60 percent of men go to the doctor for a yearly, routine check up, and 40 percent won’t go until something is seriously wrong”. That means there is a large population of men that are missing out on preventive care services and yearly health checks.

7 Facts about Men’s Health

Now that you know what Men’s Health Month is let’s discuss why it is necessary to spread awareness:

  • The mortality rate is 41% higher for men than women
  • Men are more likely to be overweight
  • 31% of men suffer from depression and 9% of men have daily feelings of depression or anxiety
  •  Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men
  • Men are twice as likely to have hearing loss
  • Men have a 1 in 2 chance of developing cancer
  • Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death for men in the United States

How to participate in Men’s Health Month

Dr. Matthew Strain at the West Jefferson Medical center suggests all men participate in Men’s Health month by choosing activities that can improve your health. He suggests incorporating more exercise, scheduling regular visits with a doctor or healthcare professional, and eating healthier. Dr. Strain also recommends educating yourself on health risks, getting a better sleep, and starting a new activity. All of these tips can help you or a loved one live a healthier and happier life!
