UltraComfort Intern Spotlight: Cecelia O’Malley

My Internship Experience at UltraComfort America

When I was searching for an internship, I was looking for a place where I could grow as a marketer and gain hands-on business experience. I was fortunate to find that opportunity at UltraComfort America. What I found at UltraComfort was much more than a place to gain professional experience; it was an opportunity to learn from passionate people, understand the purpose behind impactful work, and see the impact a company can have on people’s lives.

Discovering the Mission Behind UltraComfort

UltraComfort America is a family-owned American business that designs premium lift chairs with the goal of helping people live more comfortably and independently. Throughout my internship, I learned that this mission goes beyond the product itself; it is reflected in the people, processes, and values that make up the company.

Before starting my internship, I didn’t know much about lift chairs. At first glance, they seemed like a simple product, but I quickly realized they represent so much more. I learned how they help people maintain their independence, improve their comfort, and continue doing the everyday activities that many of us take for granted. Seeing the real impact these chairs have on people’s lives gave a whole new meaning to the marketing work I was doing.

My Role as a Marketing Intern

Throughout my internship, I had the opportunity to bring UltraComfort’s story to life through a variety of marketing projects. From creating social media content to developing new ideas and building a portfolio of my work, I was able to see how each piece of content played a role in connecting the brand with its audience. I also had the opportunity to shadow employees within the marketing department, which gave me a better understanding of the work that happens behind the scenes. I learned that a strong brand is built through the people behind it, the values it represents, and the connections it creates with the people it serves. I saw firsthand how storytelling can help people better understand not only a product’s features, but also the lasting impact it can have on someone’s life. This experience helped me grow my skills in content creation, strategy, and brand storytelling while giving me a better understanding of what it means to create marketing that truly connects with your audience.

The People Behind the Chair

One of the biggest things I’ll take away from this internship isn’t just an appreciation for the products, it’s an appreciation for the people behind them. On my first day, I had the opportunity to take a tour of the factory and see all the moving parts that go into creating an UltraComfort lift chair. Seeing the different departments work together, from sewing the fabric to the final steps of inspection, gave me a new appreciation for the time, effort, and teamwork behind every chair. Every product is the result of hardworking individuals who take pride in what they do, knowing that what they build makes a real difference in someone’s daily life. That sense of purpose was something I witnessed every day, as each employee understood that their role contributed to something bigger.

The UltraComfort Environment

I also learned the story of the Golden family and how UltraComfort came to be. Hearing about the company’s history and seeing the values it was built on gave me an even greater appreciation for the work being done every day. I had the opportunity to work with members of the Golden family, and they were welcoming, approachable, and genuinely invested in both the company and its people. Their leadership has helped create a business where employees are valued, teamwork is encouraged, and people enjoy coming to work.

After spending time with the team, it became clear why so many employees value being part of the UltraComfort family. The culture they have created showed me the kind of leader and business professional I hope to become. As I begin my own career, I hope to carry those same values of integrity, respect, and genuine care for others with me wherever I go.

The UltraComfort environment also encourages the value of continuous learning. On my first day, I learned about the company’s shared bookshelf, where employees bring in books for one another on business, leadership, and personal growth. I thought it was such a simple but meaningful idea. It reflected a culture where people are encouraged to keep learning, challenge themselves, and share knowledge with others. It was inspiring to see so many employees genuinely invested in bettering themselves, both personally and professionally, and it showed me the importance of being surrounded by people who are always willing to learn and grow.

Looking Ahead

My time at UltraComfort America taught me lessons that extend far beyond marketing. I learned the importance of staying curious, continuing to grow, and finding purpose in the work you do. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from a team that truly cares about its products, its employees, and the people it serves. This experience gave me greater confidence in my abilities as a marketer and showed me the kind of professional I hope to become.

I want to thank the Golden family for welcoming me into UltraComfort and creating an environment where I felt supported, valued, and encouraged to learn. I am also incredibly grateful to Sarah Lydon, C.J. Copley, Alyssa Golden, and Ryan Winters for taking the time to mentor me, answer my questions, and provide guidance throughout my internship. Their willingness to share their knowledge and experiences helped me grow both professionally and personally.

As I move forward in my career, I hope to carry the same passion, dedication, and commitment to creating work that makes a difference that I experienced at UltraComfort. I am grateful for the lessons, relationships, and experiences that have shaped me during this internship, and I look forward to applying them wherever my career takes me.
