Today is National Relaxation Day, a day to step away from our hectic lifestyles and breathe. National Relaxation Day is observed annually on August 15th and was started by Michigan-native Sean Moeller in 1985 to remind people the importance of relaxation. It aims to teach people about the symptoms of stress and burnout and offer healthy solutions. You can participate in National Relaxation Day by completing activities that you deem as relaxing. An article by USA Today recommends starting your National Relaxation Day the night before by getting a “good night’s rest”, they suggest that proper rest can lead to you feeling more relaxed. Some other ways to participate are exercise and self-care, both can result in lessened stress. Below you can find a list of activities that you can do that may help you reduce stress.

- Meditate
- Listen to music
- Read a book
- Treat yourself to a spa day
- Talk to friends
- Walk in nature
- Eat a good meal
Now that you know a little bit about National Relaxation Day, here is how I plan to start and end National Relaxation Day this year.
My wakeup time is 6:30 am and the first thing I do is make my favorite breakfast. – 2 scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast. After breakfast I’ll do a quick morning workout that includes 1 mile on the treadmill and a few bodyweight exercises. A little bit after 7:00 am, I finish up my workout and I am ready to start preparing myself for the day. I freshen up and start getting dressed for work. This morning routine allows me to start my day relaxed and with a clear head.
At 5:00 pm I finish my work day and head home. On my way, I plan on picking up dinner at a local restaurant and I’ll stop in the tackle shop to grab some fishing gear. When I get home, I’d like to enjoy dinner outside with my family as we talk about our day. After dinner, I will head to the fishing hole and spend the rest of the daylight sitting by the water with my fishing pole. Around 9:00 I’ll start packing up my things and head home. I get home at 9:30 and will then start winding down for the night! I planned a day full of all my favorite activities that help me relax and stay stress-free.
